TOMMY MCELROY (He/Him)

SOCIAL WORK CLINICAL INTERN

I am currently a graduate student in the Master of Social Work program at the University of Washington. I earned my AA from Shoreline Community College and BA in Sociology from Western Washington University. I was raised in the suburbs and am a loyal Seattle sports fan. Upon graduating, I moved to Korea for a couple of years and returned to Seattle inspired to begin a career in social work.

My interest in therapy comes from my lived experience as a neurodivergent Korean transracial adoptee navigating racial and cultural identities in a mixed family. I am also a proud Certified Peer Counselor and my approach is grounded in the framework that you are the expert in your own life. Having worked with youth and families experiencing crisis, I also believe that you have the knowledge and desire to heal, along with guidance from supports in your life.

In addition to being person-centered, trauma-informed, and neurodivergent-affirming, I enjoy collaborating and supporting your goals in ways that best serve your life story. Adolescence and young adulthood are hard. So too are life transitions. It is a lot, and we don’t have to go through it alone.

I enjoy and feel so honored to work with those who feel “in-between”. We all have such a powerful and beautiful ability to live as we truly desire. As an Asian American man, I saw very few mental health professionals who looked like me. I feel very passionate about increasing access to BIPOC therapy and am so humbled to be here.
